Wi-FI Protected Setup (WPS) is Insecure: Here’s Why You Should Lock It

WPA2 with a strong password is secure as long as you disable WPS. 
You’ll find this advice in guides to securing your Wi-Fi all over the 
web. Wi-Fi Protected Setup was a nice idea, but using it is a mistake. 
Your router probably supports WPS and it’s likely enabled by default.
 Like UPnP, this is an insecure feature that makes your wireless network
 more vulnerable to attack. 
What is Wi-Fi Protected Setup?

Most home users should be using WPA2-Personal, also known as WPA2-PSK. 
The “PSK” stands for “pre-shared key.” You set up a wireless passphrase 
on your router and then provide that same passphrase on each device you 
connect to your WI-Fi network. This essentially gives you a password 
that protects your Wi-FI network from unauthorized access. The router 
derives an encryption key from your passphrase, which it uses to encrypt
 your wireless network traffic to ensure people without the key can’t 
eavesdrop on it. 
This can be a bit inconvenient, as you have to enter your passphrase 
on each new device you connect. Wi-FI Protected Setup (WPS), was created
 to solve this problem. When you connect to a router with WPS enabled, 
you’ll see a message saying you can use an easier way to connect rather

PIN: The router has a eight-digit PIN that you need to enter on your 
devices to connect. Rather than check the entire eight-digit PIN at 
once, the router checks the first four digits separately from the last 
four digits. This makes WPS PINs very easy to “brute force” by guessing 
different combinations. There are only 11,000 possible four-digit codes,
 and once the brute force software gets the first four digits right, the
 attacker can move on to the rest of the digits. Many consumer routers 
don’t time out after a wrong WPS PIN is provided, allowing attackers to 
guess over and over again. A WPS PIN can be brute-forced in about a day.
 [Source] Anyone can use software named “Reaver” to crack a WPS PIN. 
Push-Button-Connect: Instead of entering a PIN or passphrase, you can
 simply push a physical button on the router after trying to connect. 
(The button may also be a software button on a setup screen.) This is 
more secure, as devices can only connect with this method for a few 
minutes after the button is pressed or after a single devices connects. 
It won’t be active and available to exploit all the time, as a WPS PIN 
is. Push-button-connect seems largely secure, with the only 
vulnerability being that anyone with physical access to the router could
 push the button and connect, even if they didn’t know the Wi-Fi 
passphrase.

PIN is Mandatory 
While push-button-connect is arguably secure, the PIN authentication 
method is the mandatory, baseline method that all certified WPS devices 
must support. That’s right — the WPS specification mandates that devices
 must implement the most insecure method of authentication. 
Router manufacturers can’t fix this security problem because the WPS 
specification calls for the insecure method of checking PINs. Any device
 implementing Wi-FI Protected Setup in compliance with the specification
 will be vulnerable. The specification itself is no good. 
Can You Disable WPS? 
There are several different types of routers out there. 
<ul>
<li>Some routers don’t allow you to disable WPS, providing no option in their configuration interfaces to do so.</li>
<li>Some routers provide an option to disable WPS, but this option does 
nothing and WPS is still enabled without your knowledge. In 2012, this 
flaw was found on “every Linksys and Cisco Valet wireless access point… 
tested.” [Source]</li>
<li>Some routers will allow you to either disable or enable WPS, offering no choice of authentication methods.</li>
<li>Some routers will allow you to disable PIN-based WPS authentication while still using push-button authentication.</li>
<li>Some routers don’t support WPS at all. These are probably the most secure.</li>

If your router allows you to disable WPS, you’ll likely find this 
option under Wi-FI Protected Setup or WPS in its web-based configuration
 interface. 
You should at least disable the PIN-based authentication option. On 
many devices, you’ll only be able to choose whether to enable or disable
 WPS. Choose to disable WPS if that’s the only choice you can make. 
 
We’d be a bit worried about leaving WPS enabled, even if the PIN 
option appears to be disabled. Given the terrible record of router 
manufacturers when it comes to WPS and other insecure features like 
UPnP, isn’t it possible that some WPS implementations would continue to 
make PIN-based authentication available even when it appeared to be 
disabled?

Sure, you could theoretically be secure with WPS enabled as long as 
PIN-based authentication was disabled, but why take the risk? All WPS 
really does is allow you to connect to Wi-Fi more easily. If you create a
 passphrase you can easily remember, you should be able to connect just 
as fast. And this is only an issue the first time — once you’ve 
connected a device once, you shouldn’t have to do it again. WPS is 
awfully risky for a feature that offers such a small benefit.

What is Nest Thermostat and why would you use it?

Heating doesn’t sound like a hot topic, but it is when you’re talking
 about the Nest Thermostat: it comes from the father of the iPod and 
could end up automating our homes. So what is the Nest Thermostat, how 
does it work, and will it run on Android? Let’s find out.

Nest is the brainchild of Tony Fadell, who was the senior vice 
president of Apple’s iPod division before setting up Nest Labs in 2010. 
Its first product, the Nest Thermostat, was announced in late 2011 – and
 the whole company was snapped up by Google in 2014 for $3.2 billion 
USD. That’s a lot of money for a thermostat, but Nest is no ordinary 
thermostat.

Let’s get the biggest question out of the way first.

Nest thermostat: does it work on Android?</h2>
Yes, it does. The Android app is a lovely thing, although of course 
it’s completely useless if you don’t actually have a Nest product.

Nest Thermostat: what does it do?</h2>
The Nest Learning Thermostat, to give it its full name, is a device 
with sensors and internet access via Wi-Fi. The key word is “learning”: 
it learns when you turn the heating up or whack on the airconditioning, 
and that enables it to work out a schedule it can use to get the 
temperature just-so without you having to lift a finger. It also learns 
how long it takes to heat up your home, so if you want everything toasty
 when you get out of bed it’ll work out exactly when it should start 
heating the place up.

The Nest Learning Thermostat doesn’t just watch the temperature, 
though. It watches you too, so if you leave the house it turns the 
heating down. And with its app you can control the temperature from 
anywhere, so you can turn on the heating or aircon if you’re going to be
 home earlier than usual (or just mess with your family if you’re away 
somewhere and they’re all home).

Nest Thermostat: how does it work?</h2>
In Europe, the Nest Thermostat connects to a device called Heat Link,
 which connects to your central heating boiler and turns it on and off. 
The thermostat can connect to Heat Link via Wi-Fi or using low voltage 
wires.

No matter where in the world you are the Nest Thermostat works just 
like a normal thermostat: if you want to turn the heating up or down you
 can do just that by turning it. The magic is in the learning, which 
ensures you don’t heat your home when you don’t need to – so it saves 
energy and money.

It’s still a thermostat, though. What’s all the excitement?</h2>
Saving money is exciting, right? It is, but Nest is about much more 
than just saving money on heating. There’s a second product, Nest 
Protect, which is a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. If it 
detects trouble it tells you what’s happening and where it’s happening, 
and if you’re not at home it sends an alert to your phone.

Nest Protect connects to the Nest Learning Thermostat, so if it 
detects carbon monoxide it gets the thermostat to shut down your boiler 
in case that’s the source of the leak. Its sensors also supplement the 
thermostat’s auto-away feature, which turns down the heating when you go
 out.

Thermostats. Smoke detectors. It’s hardly the stuff of sci-fi.</h2>
No, but the bigger picture is. Don’t think of Nest as a thermostat. 
Think of it as a hub for the internet of things, which is the current 
buzzword for a world of smart devices that talk to each other. The Works
 With Nest program is designed to connect Nest devices to all kinds of 
things from smart lightbulbs to electronic locks and even cars. Fancy a 
phone that knows when you’re out and forwards calls to your mobile? A 
lock that knows who’s opening the door and what temperature they like? A
 car that calls home to let all of your appliances know when you’ll 
arrive? Fitness trackers that tell Nest you’re waking early so it needs 
to get the heating on?

That’s a bit more interesting, and things get even more interesting 
when you remember that Nest is now part of Google. There are already 
stacks of Android Wear recipes for Nest on IFTTT.com,
 and the more devices that take part in the Works With Nest program the 
more things you’ll be able to control with your smartwatch or 
smartphone.

So what’s next for Nest?</h2>

The smart money’s on home security: Nest’s sensors could easily 
connect to a home alarm system, and Nest’s 2014 purchase of Dropcam was a
 pretty big hint in that direction: the stick-anywhere cameras are 
perfect for applications ranging from burglar detection to baby 
monitoring. The Internet of Things is expected to generate huge sums of 
money, and Nest already appears to be miles ahead of new entrants such 
as Apple. Compare Works With Nest to the mediocre selection of Apple 
HomeKit-compatible products announced so far and you’ll see what we mean
 – and of course Nest will work with Apple devices too, because it wants
 to be everywhere.

Nest will also be influencing Google Glass: Tony Fadell is now in 
charge, and according to the New York Times he’s redesigning the headset
 from scratch to get it right. Unlike the original Glass, there won’t be
 any public beta: Fadell doesn’t believe in shipping half-finished 
products, so we won’t see what he’s done with Glass until he’s happy 
with it. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with.

 the latest app for Google’s mobile platform, allowing you to stream 
your PC games to your Android device with near zero latency or 
degradation in visuals. According to the developers, you can play “PC
 games on your Android mobile device for free, enjoying the same

 on your computer.”

Remotr works in tandem with the streamer software for the 
PC, which can be downloaded from the developer’s website and easily 
installed. Once up and running, Remotr for Android will be 
ready for action, and to kick start things, it comes bundled with 
presets for popular titles such as Diablo III, League of Legends, 
TrackMania and many more. However controls can be modified and 
customized for each game according to the user’s preference. This helps 
gamers in adjusting controls for say, strategy titles differently than 
the more simplistic controls for racing simulators, ensuring that things
 don’t get awkward while playing.

The app is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, 
with a PC that is running at least a dual-core CPU to keep up with the 
intensive communication and processing tasks that are required to make 
the streaming magic happen. That said, it is obvious that at the heart 
of the gaming is the GPU, where Remotr will best perform with graphic adapters that would allow for a gameplay of 60 frames per second. The Remotr team recommends a GTX 660, but that does not mean AMD Radeon users have anything to worry about.

Remotr for Android can be downloaded for free from Google Play and is compatible with Android 4.1 and above. The Remotr streamer app for the PC is also available for free from the developer’s website.
